West Bengal

Kantha originated in the regions of erstwhile East Bengal, present day West Bengal and Bihar.
This craft of patched, quilted and vividly embroidered textile made entirely out of used cloth , has been derived from the Sanskrit word kontha meaning 'rags' .
Traditionally practiced by bengali women , irrespective of class or status, emanated from the way in which they mended their old clothes from a strand of thread from the colorful border of their saris and made designs with them.It consists ,generally of a running stitch on the sarees in the form of motifs such as animals, birds, flowers, simple geometrical shapes and scenes from daily life.
