Lanjia Soara Mask

Ittalan wall painting is practiced by the Lanjia Saora Adivasis in the honour of their ancestors and spirits. Saoras paint a house within their house whilst in dialogue with their ancestors to give them homage. The tradition of wall painting has almost languished. It gives respect and peace to the wandering ancestral spirits who may be malevolent or benevolent. The iconic visual representation of the abode in honour of dead is linked with the shamanic tradition to evoke the dead by the woman priest and address the grievances, illness, and diseases either through dream or trance for people's well being to avoid any encounter such as curse that is caused by the spirits.
