Kantha originated in the regions of erstwhile East Bengal, present day West Bengal and Bihar.
This craft of patched, quilted and vividly embroidered textile made entirely out of used cloth , has been derived from the Sanskrit word kontha meaning 'rags' .
Traditionally practiced by bengali women , irrespective of class or status, emanated from the way in which they mended their old clothes from a strand of thread from the colorful border of their saris and made designs with them.It consists ,generally of a running stitch on the sarees in the form of motifs such as animals, birds, flowers, simple geometrical shapes and scenes from daily life
